Children don't "pick up" two languages by accident — they move through a remarkably orderly sequence, much of it shared with kids learning just one language. Here's the arc from before birth to the early school years, and what the research says is happening at each step.
Before birth: tuning in
In the final weeks of pregnancy, babies are already listening. Newborns can tell languages apart by their rhythm, and bilingual newborns show interest in both of their languages while monolingual newborns prefer their single one (Byers-Heinlein, Burns & Werker, 2010). Exposure starts before day one.
0–6 months: citizens of the world
Newborns can distinguish the sounds of every human language — universal phonetic sensitivity (Werker & Tees, 1984; Kuhl et al., 1992). Around two months, "protoconversations" begin — babies take turns in cooing exchanges with adult-like timing. By about four months, bilingual babies already separate their two languages.
6–12 months: the brain tunes to what it hears
This is the well-known window. The ability to hear sounds from unheard languages fades while heard-language sounds sharpen — perceptual narrowing (Werker & Tees, 1984). Crucially, babies learn these sounds from live people, not screens: in one study, infants learned a new language's sounds from an in-person tutor but learned nothing from the identical audio or video (Kuhl, Tsao & Liu, 2003). Bilingual babies keep both of their sound systems online (Burns et al., 2007).
12–24 months: first words, then combinations
First words arrive around 12 months — on the same schedule whether a child is learning one language or two (Pearson & Fernández, 1994). Bilingual toddlers produce "translation equivalents" (milk and leche) even with tiny vocabularies, evidence of two systems, not one (Pearson et al., 1995). First two-word combinations ("big doggy," "no go") appear around 24 months, again on time.
2–6 years: switching, then reflecting
By age two to three, children code-switch appropriately and even adjust to whom they're talking to (Genesee, Nicoladis & Paradis, 1995). Around five to six, metalinguistic awareness comes online — the ability to step back and think about language ("I speak English with you and Spanish with Abuela").
A note on honesty: these are population-level findings with wide individual variation, drawn largely from Spanish–English and English–French families. Treat the ages as a map, not a measuring stick.
